A CIRCUS at the centre of cruelty allegations has been forced to cancel a North Yorkshire show planned for next month.
The Robby Roberts Super Circus was due at the Yorkshire Events Centre in Harrogate, on April 21.
However, the venue announced yesterday it had cancelled the show following “allegations regarding treatment of one of the circus elephants”.
The circus featured in national media at the weekend after hidden camera footage emerged which appeared to show handler repeatedly beating the elderly animal with a pitchfork.
Nigel Pulling, chief executive of The Yorkshire Agricultural Society which booked the show, said his staff were “horrified” by the footage.
On its website, the circus said it “shared the outrage over the footage” and said the incidents were isolated and that “had the employee not disappeared he would have been sacked immediately”.
