WOMEN have donated their underwear to make colourful bunting for a festival in York.
The bunting was created to be a “unique piece of feminist social artwork” to launch the University of York’s Carnival of Feminist Cultural Activism.
Textile artist Julia Triston put the bunting together to celebrate the diversity of women’s shapes and sizes.
She said: “The aim of the carnival bunting is to show that our underwear can tell a story of its own, whoever we are and whatever we portray externally. In this piece of artwork we will be putting on show, proudly and honestly, what is usually unseen and taboo.”
She also asked women if they had a tale to tell about the knickers they donated. The three-day festival, which finishes on Friday, is organised by the Centre for Women’s Studies, and is celebrating 100 years of International Women’s Day.
