SEA Of Bees is Julie Baenziger, or Julie Anne Bee, or Jules as she calls herself. Anyway, let it Bee, but for definite, she is a 26-year-old, multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter from Sacramento, California, and while her mesmeric voice floats like a butterfly, she does not sting like a bee too often.
Instead, she tends towards whimsy and baffled wonder at all things bright and beautiful on her debut album. That said, the vulnerable, edgy Marmalade essays her support for a troubled friend and the echo-filled single Wizbot is as eerie as a shut-down playground.
As for that old devil called love, she is unpredictable, the skipping beat of Willis masking the creeping chill inside a love “bigger than the sea, bigger than me”, while Sidepain is a rattling pop song that turns a drink-fuelled reflection on a broken relationship into the “sweetest pain in my side”. Well, who hasn’t been there?
