SOARING thefts of cables on the East Coast Main Line are putting lives at risk and worsening train delays for York passengers.

British Transport Police said the theft of copper cables from railways had doubled since this time last year.

Recently more than 100 trains were affected as the London to Edinburgh line was delayed when thieves stole only £44-worth of cabling.

Last September, The Press reported that 12 trains were cancelled and 23 services were delayed following a cable theft near Newark.
