A SECTION of York’s inner ring road was closed after a car went down an embankment towards a pedestrian walkway.

North Yorkshire Police were called to the A1237 near the Haxby Road roundabout yesterday afternoon after a black Ford Fiesta and silver Peugeot 307 collided at about 1.25pm.

As a result of the crash, the Fiesta narrowly missed the safety barrier protecting the underpass tunnel, and came off the road.

The car then slid down the embankment, coming to a stop in a shrub next to the underpass, which is used by parents and children to get to and from the nearby Joseph Rowntree School.

Police closed the road at 2.45pm to recover the Fiesta, and reopened it shortly after 3pm, before the underpass became busy with pedestrians.

An ambulance was also sent to the scene after being alerted to the collision by police.

Nobody was injured in the incident.
