SO City of York Council is to lose almost £12.3 million of Government cash over the next two years and chief executive Kersten England and the authority’s leader, Coun Andrew Waller, are examining which services should be cut.

I can guarantee that not one penny of those cuts will be found from scrapping proposed cycling schemes in the city.

• OVER the past eight years, while City of York Council has been in Liberal Democrat control, it enjoyed an increase in funding from a Labour Government to the tune of £52 million. Some money was well spent, some was wasted.

Each annual rise was bemoaned by the Liberal Democrats as a “raw deal”. Yet now the Conservative Liberal Democrat Government is cutting funding to the council to the tune of £7.6m this year and £4.6m next year.

This year, the council will see a decrease of 13.3 per cent, well above the maximum 8.9 per cent the Government keeps repeating. The cuts just got real in York and no swimming pool, library or care home is safe.

This grant is nothing short of political vandalism and it is the people of York who will suffer.

Coun James Alexander, Leader of City of York Council’s Labour Opposition Group.
