Clifton ‘A’ moved to the top of men’s division one with an 8-1 away win over Selby/Drax ‘A’ in the York Badminton League.

George Noble and Erik Wagenaars were in great form once again for the visitors winning their three rubbers in straight sets for a total of 126-79.

RI Monday/Wednesday ‘B’ bagged a 7-2 division two away win over Selby/Drax ‘B’ followed by a 6-3 home success over a lively St John’s team. Loz Smith and Dave Preece were the Institute mainstays in both matches taking six wins in six rubbers for a two-match total of 271.

University Staff lead men’s three after a hard fought 9-0 win at Copmanthorpe. Hamil Smail and Raza Marwah put in another good display for the campus side which brought them three wins for 139-88.

University Students ‘C’ went into second place after a fifth straight win by beating hosts RI Monday/Wednesday ‘C’ 8-1. The campus brothers pairing of Richard and Taz Tang played some tremendous badminton to take three straight wins for 126-57.

Clifton ‘A’ opened their ladies division one season with a 6-3 home win over Selby/Drax.

Karen Averan and Heather Clarke took maximum points for Clifton, which included a 12 and 7 triumph over Lisa Ward and Michelle Hall, who took two points for the visitors.

RI Monday/Wednesday ‘A’ were good value for an 8-1 home win over St John’s.

Sandra Pauw and Kate Jackson were best for RI with three straight wins for 126-60. Nikki Hainsworth and Joy Wong stopped the whitewash with a 10-21, 21-10, 21-19 defeat of Joy Wilson and Alex Darlington.

St John’s entertained RI Monday/Wednesday ‘A’ in mixed one and were well beaten 9-0 by a strong Institute team. Chris Hunt and Alex Darlington were the pick of the visiting pairs with a tremendous series for a return of 126-70.

University Students ‘C’ moved into second spot in mixed two after a comprehensive 8-1 home win over Huntington ‘A’. Tim Robson and Beth Cowell emphasised their opening pair status by taking the best student return of 126-101 in straight sets.

Pocklington showed good form in mixed three with a 5-4 home win over RI Tuesday/Thursday ‘C’ and a 6-3 defeat of hosts Fulfordgate ‘B’.

Derek Burt and Yvonne Neaves led the way in both wins taking five wins from six rubbers, their only loss being a 16-21, 21-17, 11-21 to Stacy Locker and Ben McNeilage of the Institute ‘C’ team. Garry Hall and Caroline Ryder played well for Fulfordgate ‘B’ to record two wins.
