Lib Dem Chris Wiggin would do well to remember that it is Vince Cable spearheading the massive tuition fees hike, and it is his party that are making this change possible and preventing “a full and proper debate” (The Press, December 7).

Indeed, as we all know, this is despite his party making opposing such fee rises a key manifesto policy, as well as all Lib Dem MPs making this a personal pledge. Julian Sturdy – Tory MP for York Outer – also made this promise to University of York students in February.

As such, perhaps Mr Wiggin’s efforts would be better focused on changing his own party’s position back to what they promised the country in May, instead of calling on other parties to save the Lib Dems from the mess they have made.

Labour is the only major party that will vote against this dishonest and wrong policy, on the basis it will make university access based on ability to pay rather than ability to learn.

Labour are therefore the only party that is standing up for ordinary aspirational students and their families on this issue.
