A PREGNANT woman stranded in snow in East Yorkshire was rescued by two policemen, who struggled through waist-deep snow to reach her.

Medics said the 19-year-old, who suffered from a medical condition exacerbated by the cold “would have come to some harm” had she not been rescued, Humberside Police said.

The woman, who is 16 weeks pregnant, was stuck in the Land Rover Discovery with two other people in deep snow near Pocklington on Tuesday night.

PC Neil Fraser and PC Tony Harrison were checking nearby roads for vehicles having problems in the snow.

As they travelled along Givendale Road towards the A166, they saw hazard warning lights flashing.

They took the police car as far as they could then set off on foot, walking through waist-deep snow for at least half a mile to get to the car.

The pregnant woman was said to be suffering from the cold having been there for some time.

The officers, who are based at Beverley Police Station, helped the three off the hill where they managed to get another police 4x4 to take them to Pocklington Police Station.

The Land Rover had the engine on to keep the occupants warm, but fumes from the exhaust had been blowing back into the vehicle.

Police said an ambulance was called but the pregnant woman did not require hospital treatment.

The two officers said in a statement: “We were just doing our job and we were just pleased we came across the car when we did.”

Supt Mike Duggleby urged people to take extra care on the roads, allow extra time for their journey, and leave extra space to slow down at junctions and between vehicles.
