PRIMED for oche glory – that’s York chairman of the darts board Chris Thompson.
While he did not get the draw he coveted most – a clash with former world champion Raymond van Barneveld – the Acomb arrows sure-shot has been given a tie to fill him with hope of further progress in next month’s PDC Ladbrokes.com World Championships.
Thompson was the 32nd name teased out of the hat to be drawn against Derby-based Teessider Colin Osborne in the first round of the garlanded event played at Alexandra Palace.
The Hitman told The Press: “I’m quite happy with that. There were some big names in the hat after me who I rather hoped to avoid like Phil Taylor (13-times world champion), James Wade and Adrian Lewis.
“I would not have minded getting Barney (van Barneveld), but I’m happy with what I’ve got.”
Thompson, a legal executive with York firm Minster Law, said he had previously twice played Osborne with each having beaten the other.
“It could have been a lot worse,” said Thompson, who is sponsored by Ecoflooring UK and YES Scaffolding. It’s given me a good chance of progressing.”
First round matches at ‘Ally Pally’ are played from Thursday, December 16, to Thursday, December 23.
