PUPILS from a North Yorkshire primary school have joined hundreds of thousands of children across the world in a new scheme to improve health awareness.

A total of 120 children from Osbaldwick Primary School were issued with pedometers to take part in the scheme, which was created by Global Children's Challenge earlier this year.

Matt Brown, assistant head teacher at the school, said the children had learned a lot from the scheme.

He said: “Having the pedometers helped give the children a sense of ownership of their own fitness, and pupils who have wanted to become more active have become more motivated.

“It has also helped with their maths, as the children have been adding up their steps, finding averages, and working out how far they have walked as a school.”

The scheme has been run at 500 schools around the country involving 37,000 children who have tried to walk 15,000 steps per day to improve their long-term health.
