A LARGE amount of cannabis was seized and five people arrested in a series of co-ordinated raids across the Selby district.

The raids took place at four locations across the area, including Wistow.

Police arrested four men and one woman on Tuesday morning. All of those arrested were aged in their 40s and 50s.

Officers have refused to say how much cannabis was found or how much it was worth.

None of those arrested have been charged and have since been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Sgt Michelle Falkingham, of the Selby Response Team, said: “These were just the latest raids in our ongoing campaign against the supply of illegal drugs in our communities.

“The raids should send a clear message to those involved in this insidious trade that we will use all methods at our disposal to bring them to justice.”

In September, police removed items from a house in Garman Carr Lane in Wistow as part of their investigation into a blaze at the property.

Firefighters had called in police after putting out the blaze, believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.

A police spokesman said at the time it was believed there may have been a quantity of cannabis in the property.

In July, cannabis plants with an estimated street value of £40,000 were found by officers in a building in Carr Street, Selby, near the former Cochrane’s shipyard.

Anyone with information about people involved with the sale of drugs is asked to phone police on 0845 60 60247. People can also phone Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
