DANCE partners Sue Clark and Barrie Mills have their sights on rock’n’roll gold.

Sue, a 62-year-old grandmother from Cloughton, near Scarborough, met widower Barrie, 79, from Scarborough, at a dance class and the couple have been rock’n’roll dancing for two years.

They passed both bronze and silver medal exams earlier this year, they now they are aiming at the gold exam.

Sue said: “I used to go dancing as a teenager, but stopped and when I turned 60 I decided to take it up again to prove to my granddaughter that grannies can dance too.

“I absolutely adore dancing, but my husband won’t dance. I met Barrie at dance classes at the L.P. Dance Centre in Whitby and we both discovered that our rather wonky styles fitted.”

Sue, who works as a centre manager in Pickering, said: “Dancing is really great for people our age. It’s not just physical exercise, it’s mental exercise learning all the steps and routines and that’s important as you’re getting older, to keep mentally alert.”

An avid fan of the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing TV programme, Sue said she sympathises with some of the problems faced by the older contestants.

She said: “When Paul Daniels said he had memory lapses in the middle of it, I could identify with that.

“My job is very demanding, busy and hectic and on a night my head switches off and that's when I think of dancing.”
