BULK-buying goods and services is expected to save Selby District Council up to £300,000 over the next three years.

The council has agreed to the action plan in partnership with Ryedale District Council and Scarborough Borough Council.

The three councils already have a “procurement partnership” but the new proposals go further.

By buying goods and services in bulk all three councils will benefit from reduced prices.

A spokesman for Selby Council said since the partnership was set up in 2009 it has saved almost £20,000.

Council leader Coun Mark Crane said: “The Government spending review has set out exactly the savings needed from local authorities across the country to tackle the deficit.

“We’re looking at many different ways we can improve efficiency and reduce expenditure in order to be able to meet the required savings.

Procurement is a key area, which is why we’ve entered into this joint working agreement with Scarborough and Ryedale.

“This is a very practical way we can drive down costs and save taxpayers’ money, without a detrimental affect on the services people receive.

“It’s a win-win for everyone involved.

“The procurement strategy now in place sets out an action plan for us to be able to achieve savings of up to £100,000 for Selby District Council over three years by being innovative and working together.”

The strategy also looks at how procurement can be used to support local businesses and the area’s economy, through an emphasis on giving opportunities to small and medium-size companies.
