What and where? Tropical World at Roundhay Park in Leeds, home to the largest collection of tropical plants outside of Kew Gardens.

Tropical World is a must for any nature lover. The attraction is split into six sections which define the plants and animals found there. Perhaps most famous is Butterfly House where between 30 and 40 different species of butterfly can be seen flying free among the walk-through attraction.

Butterfly House also features mature tropical plants, leafcutter ants, various fish and Mud Turtles and Soft Belly Turtles.

Other areas include Australasia House, Creature Corner, Amazon House and Desert House. The latter features some of the most popular of Tropical World’s inhabitants, meerkats which are currently rearing some young.

Other animals to be seen at the attraction include iguanas, fruit bats, various snakes and lizards, bush babies and pirhana.

When? Tropical World is open every day apart from Christmas and Boxing Day. During British Summer Time it is open from 10am to 6pm with the last admission being at 5.30. During GMT it is 10am to 4pm with the last admissions being at 3.30pm.

How much? Adults £3.25, children between five and 15, £2. Under-fives are free and Leeds/Breeze card holders are free.

Getting there: Take the A64 into Leeds. At the Seacroft roundabout take the third exit onto the A6120 and follow the signs for Roundhay. Parking is free.
