SHOCKED residents woke to find a man in their street had died in unexplained circumstances during the night.
A man was also arrested at the address and was helping police with their inquiries.
Police said an ambulance was called to Charles Street, Selby, just after midnight yesterday. The caller had said someone at the address was unwell.
When the ambulance crew arrived they found a 37-year-old man dead. Police said several items of drugs paraphernalia were found at the flat.
Police are waiting for the man to be formally identified before disclosing his identity.
Amy Middleton, 90, who lives in Charles Street, said: "I didn't know the man or anything, but I did speak to his father once and he said he'd been in hospital after taking drugs.
"I see druggies going by the back of my house I don't like it. It's certainly not as nice round here as it used to be."
Another neighbour, a pensioner who asked not to be named, said: "This isn't something I'd expect. I've lived here 23 years and it's the first thing like this I've known of.
"It's quite a nice place most residents are pensioners, like myself."
Neighbour Nancy Reynolds said: "I'm shocked, what with it being on my doorstep. I've just come back from the shop and saw the police tape around the house. I didn't see or hear anything last night.
"I wouldn't expect something like that to happen it's quite quiet around here at the moment."
A man who lives directly above the flat where the dead man was found said he had never spoken to the owner of the flat.
He asked not to be named, but said: "I'm sick of them. All you hear every night is bang, bang, bang people coming round at night. I can't be bothered with it all."
