SUPERMARKETS don't always get a good press. They are blamed for being too dominant and for driving local shops out of business.
Today, however, we have nothing but praise for ASDA. The supermarket has decided not to sell cigarettes to anyone under 18. That is a voluntary decision. Legally, cigarettes can be sold to those aged 16 and over. Voluntarily upping that limit to 18 may not increase ASDA's profits, though some new customers could be attracted. It might certainly save some young lives, however.
Congratulations, ASDA. We hope other stores and supermarkets follow this example.
