STUDENTS working in "terrible conditions" can look forward to lessons in new surroundings after their school was selected for an ambitious Government project.
York was one of 25 local authorities to be chosen to receive funding to build a new secondary school under the Building Schools For The Future scheme.
Archbishop Holgate's School, Burnholme Community College, Millthorpe School and Joseph Rowntree were short-listed after an assessment of all schools was carried out.
Kevin Hall, City of York Council's assistant director of learning, culture and children's services, said the new building must be open by September 2009.
The council and Joseph Rowntree Trust own the land on which the school is sited and its buildings are "unsuitable" for the needs of students and staff in many respects.
City of York Council's executive member for children's services and advisory panel last night agreed to nominate Joseph Rowntree School for the project.
Coun Viv Kind said: "This is a fantastic offer that has come out of the blue. We should grab it with both hands."
