HEAVY rain drenched York and the rest of the county over the weekend, leading to dozens of calls to the emergency services about flooding.

Both Friday and Sunday saw prolonged downpours across the area and North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service reported it had been called to dozens of incidents of flooding on Sunday afternoon with ten reported in Kirkbymoorside alone.

Coun David Cussons, who represents the town on Ryedale District Council, said at least 20 homes had been affected by the water but not all would have called the fire brigade.

He said water had run off from the golf course and with drains partially blocked by fallen leaves, there was nowhere for the water to go. This led to flooding at homes in Dale End, West End and Manor Close.

In addition, the rescue boat had to be launched to help someone who was trapped on a wall and surrounded by water.

Firefighters were also called to Elvington where drains had failed and there was localised flooding in Selby, Great Broughton, Harrogate and Thirsk where roads were flooded or water had entered people’s property.

Firefighters in York reported no incidents of flooding but the city may feel the effects over the next couple of days as water drains off the hills and into the River Ouse.

Rain also caused problems for motorists with one lane of the A1(M) southbound closed near Dishforth due to flooding while speed restrictions were in place for motorists using the Humber Bridge.

Flood warnings were put in place for Bridlington with a severe weather warning in place for Yorkshire and Humber as a whole.

Yesterday, the BBC’s weather service was forecasting that the rain would have died off by this morning but that showers would return later in the week.

As The Press reported on Saturday, Friday’s deluge saw 15mm of water fall on Linton-on-Ouse weather station, nearly a third of the average rainfall for the entire month.

Even more rain fell at Fylingdales on the North York Moors – which saw 30.2mm of rain between 7pm on Thursday and 7pm Friday.
