A NORTH Yorkshire soldier who saved the life of a colleague despite being wounded himself has been honoured for his courage.
Lance Corporal Jamie Hastie, 20, of Scarborough, ignored his own injuries to help his section commander, Corporal Andy Reid, when he stepped on an improvised electronic device in Afghanistan last year.
L/Cpl Hastie administered first aid to Cpl Reid and helped to carry his stretcher, despite the risk of other unexploded devices. He is to be awarded the Queen’s Commendation.
The soldier will be among 131 members of the armed forces who receive the honour in the latest Operational Awards List, with his citation reading: “His brave and selfless actions were remarkable in preventing his fellow soldier from bleeding to death.”
L/Cpl Hastie, a member of the Yorkshire Regiment, said: “You just think ‘he’s worse than me’, so you go straight over to help.
Cpl Reid is now walking and continuing to receive treatment at the military’s Headley Court rehabilitation centre in Surrey.
