SINCE the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip on July 6, 100 Palestinians have been killed and hundreds injured, including 170 children, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

Since the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, 130 Lebanese people have been killed.

No doubt, by the time this letter is published, many more innocents will have died. This massacre has to stop now.

It is wrong, immoral and illegal to inflict collective punishment on a whole people because of the actions of a few militants.

Killing civilians and destroying the infrastructure of Gaza and Lebanon will not stop the attacks on Israel.

Obviously, the kidnapped soldiers should be released, but even the most naive of politicians should know that bombing innocent civilians will not precipitate the release of the prisoners, but will only inflame the situation and risk the conflict spreading across the Middle East.

I am deeply ashamed at the lack of condemnation of Israel by our Government.

We should calling on Israel to cease the bombing immediately and, at the same time, bring an end to the UK arms trade with Israel, which stood at £23 million last year.
