THIS is not easy listening. TV On The Radio's American art-rock sound is at times baffling, dark and always heavily distorted.
Lead singer Tunde Adebimpe's gravelly voice slides over thick guitar fuzz, beat-box rhythms and synth-samples on the Brooklyn trio's second album. Standout track Blues From Down Here is immediately catchy like a rocky, pumped-up and darker version of the old blues standards.
Huge fan David Bowie guests on Province and his voice acts as the perfect foil to Adebimpe.
Just as experimental as their 2004 debut album Desperate Youth, Blood-Thirsty Babes, Return' needs a few listens to be properly appreciated, but its art-pop sensibility means there is, at times, beautiful melody beyond the white noise and overdriven samples.
