A MAJOR street in York was closed after a large hole appeared in the road surface.

Leeman Road was closed after a 4ft deep hole opened up yesterday afternoon, just outside the Junction public house.

The damage was linked to the burst water mains which brought widespread problems to the city on Tuesday.

Yorkshire Water's duty manager Richard Smith said: "We had a burst water main there on Tuesday, and when they have done the temporary repair the traffic has gone back on it and it has started to collapse again.

"So we have, for health and safety reasons and after discussion with the council, decided to close the road and do the repair again."

The road was due to re-open at 6am this morning. Mr Smith said Yorkshire Water staff would then monitor the road during the morning rush hour."

A City of York Council spokeswoman said the local authority's staff had made the site safe and closed the road to through traffic at both the Station Road and Garfield Terrace ends.
