St Oswald's Primary School have lifted the Derwent Sports Association athletics cup despite not having a field to train on.
A 40-strong squad triumphed in the large school section of the annual contest after training on the nearby parish field.
Pupils have been without an outdoor sports area for a year while their school was rebuilt but that failed to detract from a huge team effort to win the cup.
Deputy headteacher Malcolm Murphy said: "We have won it a few times in the past but it was a bit of a surprise this year as we didn't think we had a good chance."
The event, which has been rained off several times in recent years, this time survived the weather as pupils from 11 schools competed in races, relays, skipping and throwing the cricket ball.
