Who says global warming is a bad thing? Anglers in the York area certainly weren't complaining over the weekend.

As the thermometer rose so did the weights and two venues posted new top scores in the baking conditions.

Venue regular John Brain shattered the three-hour match record at Carpvale, near York, with a blistering evening performance from peg 59 on the Front Pond.

After a day of searing temperatures the fish were lurking beneath the surface and he targeted them with floating pellets.

Fishing a short line at 12 metres, he gently lowered his offerings to the cruising fish that responded with gusto. His hectic haul of 135lb 3oz comprised 41 fish to 6lb.

Neil Milstead was well adrift, despite carding another ton-up score, his 108lb 7oz bag was also taken on floating baits.

Best of the rest were Alan Brown with 87lb 1oz and Jim Atkinson and Steve Grainger who tied on 82lb The record book was also re-written at nearby Langwith Lakes, Heslington, where Roger Holmes (Langwith Lakes) topped the 39-peg open on Emma's and Anya's Lakes with 120lb 14oz.

Offering pellet at 12 metres from peg three on Anna's, he found carp to 3lb just below the surface.

Danny Bennett took second place from peg 20 on Emma's Lake with 101lb ahead of Keith Hardy, who netted 99lb 8oz and Peter Uttley on 89lb 4oz.

There was a close finish this week with only a pound separating winner Andy Gallant from his chief rival Paul Clarke at the Willows.

Gallant offered meat and pellet at 12 metres at peg 57 to find carp to five pounds to which he added a few tench and ide for a winning 64lb 8oz.

Clarke kept up his good run of frames' with an all-out paste attack at peg 33 where carp, ide, tench and bream responded and brought him home a close second with 63lb 8oz.
