A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of rape following an attack on a teenage girl.

The 16-year-old victim told police she was raped in an alleyway between Buller Street and Kitchener Street, just outside Selby town centre, at about 12.15am on Saturday.

It is believed she had been into the town centre earlier in the evening, as had her alleged attacker, an 18-year-old local man.

The girl has since been interviewed by specialist detectives from North Yorkshire Police.

Detective Constable Lee Maeer, of Selby CID, said: “The victim has been left shocked and upset by this incident and we are doing everything we can to support her while we investigate the full circumstances.

“I am appealing for anyone that can help the investigation to contact the police with information or get in touch with Crimestoppers and pass any information to them anonymously.”

The 18-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident has been interviewed and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Anyone with information that could help the investigation is asked to phone 0845 6060247.
