A PUPIL who has never had a day off school got a huge “well done” from her classmates and teachers.

Rachael Strange has been well, in fact, for the past seven years, her whole time at Wigginton Primary School.

Now she is at the end of Year 6 – her final year –and her attendance record is fighting fit at 100 per cent, something that has never been achieved there before.

Heather King, the school administrator, said: “Even this year when we had swine flu, and quite a few children off with it – as many as half in one class – Rachael wasn’t affected.

“I think the whole school is very proud of her.”

Rachael, 11, has only two weeks left before she leaves for Joseph Rowntree School in the autumn, and is hoping not to get ill before then.

She said: “I don’t think I will because I haven’t been sick or anything since I was five.

“If I got poorly I’d just come anyway.

“There have been times when I’ve felt ill but I’ve come because I only wanted to miss a day if I was at the point where I couldn’t move, and also you get to see your friends when you go to school.”

She said she had all the usual bugs and illnesses like chicken pox at pre-school.

“Some of my friends find it sort of unbelievable,” she said.

Teachers award annual certificates for attendance, and deputy head teacher David Boarlase, said staff were already aware that Rachael had been awarded every year without fail.

He said: “It’s incredible. Anyone who goes a whole term without feeling off has done well. To be honest, I didn’t quite believe it, I don’t know what diet she’s on.”

He said Rachael, who has a sister Hannah, 13, would be getting another certificate and a special reward. He said: “It is a real achievement and an example. We’re very big on aspiration, looking for things for the children to aspire to and learn from, so for it to be from one of our own is fantastic.”
