WHILE walking through Exhibition Square in York, I was appalled to see a leaflet dispenser built like a small red open-top tour bus.

It is about the size of a small family car, and obviously designed to supplement the sales activities of the bus personnel who continually invite you to spend £7.50 to go on their tour.

Exhibition Square is fast becoming a large, open-air advertising venue. It is cluttered with open-top buses, an ice cream van, plus the tour bus hustler. This latest addition is an eyesore.

Recently, our local fish and chip shop in Front Street, Acomb, fitted an illuminated plastic fish over the door, and the council promptly had it removed. A stupid act, as many shops have signs advertising their business.

Again, it was not too long ago that the beautiful imitation Georgian gas lamps fitted high on the wall over Guy Fawkes bar, in High Petergate, were removed as the council did not like them.

York is a tourist city, but in Exhibition Square we are in danger of destroying what the tourists come to see. So let’s get rid of the largest leaflet dispenser in the world.
