A YORK man remains in a critical condition after his car crashed into a brick wall just outside Bilton-in-Ainsty.

The 24-year-old man had to be cut from his car by firefighters, and was described yesterday as being “in a critical but stable condition” by North Yorkshire Police.

Officers have also appealed for witnesses to a separate incident, in which two teenagers were injured when their car crashed into a tree just outside York.

The 17-year-old men were in a silver-coloured Ford Ka on the westbound carriageway of the A64 at about 5.40pm on Tuesday, when the vehicle left the road and collided with a tree more than 20 metres from the roadside.

The passenger of the car was able to remove himself from the vehicle by the time emergency services arrived, but the driver remained trapped in his seat.

Firefighters from Tadcaster and Wetherby were called to the scene and removed the driver from the vehicle.

As reported in The Press yesterday, both lanes of the A64 were closed at about 6.15pm to allow the Yorkshire Air Ambulance to land and pick up the driver of the vehicle.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the driver of the car was in a comfortable condition at Leeds General Infirmary, and the passenger had suffered minor injuries and was released from hospital later in the evening.

Anyone with information which could help either investigation is urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060247.
