THEY are constantly busy combining studying and part-time jobs with providing unpaid care for relatives – but now these young carers are in line for an award.

Young Carers Revolution – a group of 12 to 20-year-olds in York who act as carers for members of their families – are the latest contenders in our Community Pride Awards. They have been put forward in the Best Community Project category for their inspirational media campaign aimed at raising awareness of young carers and helping them to get the support they need.

As part of the campaign, they produced a hard-hitting DVD highlighting the needs and experiences of young carers.

The film received a standing ovation when it was shown to professionals attending a children’s conference at York St John University.

Frances Perry, carers strategy manager at City of York Council, who nominated Young Carers Revolution for the award, said: “Each member of the group has shown commitment, passion and determination throughout the making of the DVD and the whole media campaign.

“They have supported each other through extremely difficult and emotional situations, yet still show determination to reach out to other young carers who do not receive any support, and help professionals recognise and support young carers.

“I feel they deserve a nomination for Best Community Project as they are contributing enormously to their community, speaking out on behalf of other young people and standing up to say they are proud of being young carers.”

The Best Community Project category is sponsored by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and is aimed at projects carried out by informal, or non-recognised voluntary groups.

If you have been involved in a project that has made a positive contribution to the community, we would love to hear about it.

Fill in the entry form and send it back with a supporting statement. All nominations for our awards, which we are running in conjunction with Benenden Healthcare Society and City of York Council, must reach us by July 23.
