RESIDENTS at a York sheltered housing complex gathered to celebrate the 100th birthday one of their community members.

Ada Shepherd was surrounded by her friends at Fothergil Homes in Clifton, and was even expecting special guests.

“The Lord Mayor Sue Galloway and Sheriff of York Richard Watson are both coming to the party,” said Rosemary Stubbs, warden at Fothergil.

“There’ll be sandwiches and music, and all her friends. Ada’s really looking forward to it. The party has been organised by deputy warden Carole Brown, but Ada’s been planning it for years.”

Ada moved into Fothergil in 1980, from the home she shared with her late husband Reg, who was gatekeeper of the Wigginton Road railway level crossing.

“She’s a very popular lady with a very wicked sense of humour,” said Rosemary.

According to Ada, a little bit of what you fancy can do you good.

“I asked her recently, and Ada said the secret to a long and happy life was a drop of sherry every night before bed and a regular supply of Werther’s Originals,” said Rosemary.
