PUPILS at a York school have been flying the flag for the armed forces as residents and visitors in the city are urged to show their support for a celebration of bravery.

Major John Kyle was presented with a globe by youngsters at St Lawrence’s Primary School at a flag-raising ceremony to mark Armed Forces Day. The city’s tribute to servicemen and women will continue this Saturday at an Armed Forces Day event at the Knavesmire.

The Marching Band of the Royal Artillery will lead a parade of serving personnel, cadets and veterans from the Minster through the streets of the city to the Mansion House for the Lord Mayor’s Salute, with the march starting at 2.30pm.

Once the troops have stood down in Duncombe Place, they will head to the Knavesmire for an evening concert and sunset ceremony, where the marching band will be top of the bill.

There will also a selection of performers throughout the day.

A licensed bar will run throughout the event and tickets are available from the Army Careers information office at 108 Micklegate or by phoning 01904 554660. They will also be available at the gate on the day.
