YORK High School continues to go from strength to strength, head teacher David Ellis told pupils, staff and parents who attended the annual presentation of prizes.

The theme of the evening was Celebrating Success, and Mr Ellis said the school’s success spread across a range of activities. He said GCSE results last year were the best ever achieved by pupils in the west of York, and this year’s results were expected to show another huge improvement.

He also spoke of the school’s new mission statement, which would centre on the concept of “Pride, in yourself and in your school” and would be linked to the 2012 London Olympics.

Presenting the prizes was European, Commonwealth and Olympic gold medal sprinter Darren Campbell, who had spent the day at the school, meeting pupils. He said he had found York High to be a “great school”, full of young people with dreams and ambitions. Speaking of his own achievements through sport, he said: “There is no secret to success; only hard work, focus and determination.”
