CONSERVATIVE candidate Anne McIntosh has swept to victory in the delayed General Election poll for the new Thirsk and Malton seat.

Ms McIntosh, who was the Tory MP for the old Vale of York constituency before boundary changes came into force, claimed 20,167 votes to win by a majority of 11,281.

And Liberal Democrat Howard Keal claimed second place, forcing Labour's Jonathan Roberts into third in the postponed poll, called off for three weeks until yesterday following the death of John Boakes, the original UKIP candidate, last month.

Toby Horton, who UKIP brought in as a replacement candidate, came fourth, with 38,142 votes being cast and turnout being put at 50.3 per cent.

The result means the Conservatives now hold 307 seats in the House of Commons, with the Liberal Democrats having 57 and Labour 258.
