In 1906 the Tour de France was only in its fourth edition, ridden on unmade roads on bikes with a single gear. Closer to home members of Clifton Cycling Club, which had been founded in 1895, posed for a group photograph outside St Peter's School, Bootham.

Exactly 100 years later, current members of Clifton CC gathered at the same spot to recreate the photograph.

Club treasurer Steve Savage said: "After finding this old photograph in the club archives, I thought it would be a good idea to recreate it on its anniversary to celebrate the introduction of our new club kit this year."

Clifton members will now be riding in distinctive red and black jerseys replacing the previous blue and yellow design.

The club caters for all ability levels and most forms of cycling. Said captain Rob Osman: "We have members who road race, time trial, audax, mountain bike and just ride club runs.

"We are a friendly club which welcomes new members of all abilities, and supports members in gaining fitness and getting the most out of the fantastic scenery and challenges that Yorkshire has to offer."

The club offers a range of activities from social Monday night pub rides through to the traditional Sunday club run.

On August 13, the club will be reviving the Tan Hill Audax - a 200 kilometres ride to Britain's highest inn. For more competitive riders, the club is promoting an evening time trial series based on country roads around Sheriff Hutton with 12 events on consecutive Thursday nights from May 18.

The club will also be running its very popular road race on September 10 around a challenging circuit near Terrington.

Club sponsor Cycle Heaven is providing prizes.
