MICK Cook has called on York City Knights fans to inspire his team to victory in what is being labelled the club's most important game this season.

The Knights travel to Batley on Sunday in what head coach Cook has described as a "must-win game for both teams" at the bottom of LHF Healthplan National League One.

The Bulldogs picked up their first points of the campaign ten days ago to leapfrog the Knights out of the relegation zone, but Cook is confident a first York victory is just around the corner - and he says vociferous backing from the travelling army can play a major part in helping it happen at Mount Pleasant.

"It's a big game for both teams and the reality is it will be pretty tough," said Cook.

"They're wanting points, we're wanting points. There's a lot at stake. They had a good win over Doncaster last time out while we haven't got any points as yet. It's a must-win game for both teams.

"Batley have a good home record and they've got a sloping pitch so they've got a few advantages playing at home.

"I don't know what kind of crowds they get but if we can match them and make more noise than them then it will be a big lift to the players."

Asked if the fans can make a telling difference, Cook replied: "I think they can. They generate that enthusiasm and it does transfer to the players.

"In tough periods when the players have got to find that bit extra, it does give them a lift when they hear the supporters and hear the drum going."

The Knights faithful rose to the occasion on Sunday during the team's battling Challenge Cup exit at Huddersfield Giants, and Cook has asked for more of the same in the league.

"They really got behind the lads," he said. "I could hear them where I was sat and the players heard them. Lee Paterson (club captain) has gone on record thanking them for their enthusiasm and the way they gave the team a lift right through the game, even when we had all those defensive sets to do.

"They were still singing and chanting - and there was nothing coming from the Huddersfield supporters compared to York fans. If they can keep that going it will be excellent."
