THE name Janet is said to mean "gift from God" or "God's gracious gift".
Following that line of thought, York has been thrice blessed in having three women in the role of Lord Mayor: Janets Looker, Greenwood and, now stepping into the role, Hopton.
Janet Hopton, who will be sworn in tomorrow, met her predecessors on the eve of the city's annual procession.
Janet one and Janet two have been fine ambassadors for York, and we are sure that Janet the Third will follow suit.
Just one thing: does this mean that anyone wanting to be Lord Mayor has to consider a change of name?
