A MAN was stabbed after a fight involving up to ten youths erupted in a quiet York street.

The man was stabbed in his thigh during the brawl at about 7.10pm yesterday in Tedder Road, in Acomb. A woman also suffered a broken hand during the incident.

Witnesses said they saw the male victim force his way into a house where a group of youths were having a party before the battle spilled into the street.

One neighbour said: "I was at home and looking outside the kitchen window. Then I saw this man knock on the door and barge in there while being abusive. He smashed a wine bottle outside and there was a huge fracas. There were about ten youths out there, including three or four girls.

"The fight was between him and another lad. They got him on the floor and then someone shouted: 'He's been stabbed.'"

Another neighbour said she had seen the male victim behaving aggressively in a store in Front Street only an hour before.

She said: "He walked in there and started to be verbally abusive and then he started smashing things and kicking displays over.

"I actually left the shop because he was frightening me. He went to the back of the shop and started smashing bottles of wine. Then he ran off."

Police sent several force units and an armed response team following reports that a knife had been used. They arrested two men nearby in connection with the incident.

Officers sealed off the street for over an hour while forensic officers combed the scene. An ambulance crew took both victims to York Hospital for treatment.
