THE recent report of the risk of collapse of weight-bearing pillars at St Mary's, Riccall (March 24) reminds York Unitarians of their own similar experience.
In 1991, the brickwork supports of the tower arches threatened to give way shortly after major costly restoration work had taken place and the chapel had been re-opened for worship.
One Sunday morning, our architect, Steven Parry, visited the chapel while members were enjoying coffee after the service, took one look at the cracks that had appeared and ordered everyone out of the building.
That was the beginning of yet more fundraising: a long and time-consuming process.
We send our heartfelt sympathy to the congregation of St Mary's and wish for them a generous response.
The Rev Margaret Kirk,
St Saviourgate Unitarian Chapel,
York.
