IN view of a recent experience of mine, it would come as no surprise if the Newgate Market traders decided to pack up altogether.

On Saturday, I had to visit their toilet facilities and encountered the most appalling stench, no ventilation and a general appearance of neglect. I was told by a stall-holder that the premises had not been cleaned for six weeks since the council had transferred the work to private contractors.

Why should the market folk have to endure such revolting conditions in addition to putting up with the numerous variations of our British climate?
