STREETS in Selby are to get a major spring tidy-up as part of a £25,000 scheme.

The Selby Spring Clean Scheme was being launched today, and will run throughout April and May.

It forms part of a £25,000 investment in Selby District Council's street scene services.

Three new street- sweeping vehicles will be unveiled at Selby Abbey to mark the start of the scheme.

During the scheme special spring clean days will be held in Selby, Sherburn-in-Elmet and Tadcaster, involving schools, community groups and local businesses. The extra investment being ploughed into the service is being used to purchase new street sweeping vehicles and new litter bins for public areas. The chairman of Selby District Council's Environment Board, Coun Chris Metcalfe, said: "We're kicking off the extra investment in street scene services with two months of spring cleaning the district.

"Over the next year we'll be focusing on enhancing our already good street scene services to make sure that the whole district can be proud of its public spaces and they can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike."
