Tomorrow's Pontefract race meeting was in the balance today because of the possibility of waterlogging following persistent rain.

Racing would have been possible at the West Yorkshire course today, but the ground is heavy and more rain was forecast. An inspection was planned to take place this afternoon, but racecourse officials were optimistic that the green light can be given.

Starting stalls will be used in only four of the seven races, leaving the other three to be started with a flip-tape.

Mudlovers will be in their element and Toldo, who runs in the £15,000 High-Rise Handicap, certainly fits into that category. A wide-margin winner in similar conditions at Doncaster last autumn, the Middleham gelding, trained by George Moore, promises to run a big race on his seasonal reappearance. Eddie Ahern, who knows him well, is in the saddle.

San Antonio makes plenty of appeal in the £18,000 Pontefract Park Handicap, the richest race on the card.

Trained by Pam Sly, the gelding was a winner over this course and distance last season. He has had two outings on the all-weather lately and should be primed for tomorrow's return to turf racing.

Kevin Ryan has engaged champion jockey Jamie Spencer to partner Up Tempo in the Terence Grady 70th Birthday Handicap over six furlongs and the hint should be taken. The eight-year-old has been in good form on the sand recently and will lack nothing tomorrow in race-fitness.

Stamina will be at a premium in the Jamaican Flight Handicap, run over two and a quarter miles, a race named after the popular course specialist, who is now 13-years-old.

Interesting here is Tycheros, yet another of tomorrow's runners who has been campaigned on the all-weather surface. Stuart Williams's four-year-old has won two of his four races this year and is napped to complete a treble.
