A VAN was rolled on to its side after a collision with a fire engine at a busy York junction today.

The accident happened at Walmgate Bar at about 11.30am as the fire engine was attending an emergency call.

The male van driver suffered minor injuries, but climbed out of the damaged van unassisted.

The van was crossing from Walmgate to Lawrence Street when it was in an accident with the fire engine, which was heading towards Foss Islands Road from the direction of the Barbican centre.

The white Iveco van landed on its side near the Marmaris grill takeaway, causing slight damage to the door of Jenny's Fish and Chip shop. The radiator was left hanging off the fire engine, but it was otherwise undamaged.

The fire engine was making its way to Tang Hall, after an elderly man called complaining about a ring clicking on his electric cooker.

Motorist Andrew Taylor, of Acomb, said he was waiting at the traffic lights in Lawrence Street when he saw the fire engine approaching the Walmgate Bar junction from the direction of the Barbican, with its siren going.

He said it was going round a "blind spot" at Walmgate Bar when the collision happened. "There was a very loud bang, " he said.
