AS co-ordinator of the Bus Information office, I trust you will allow me to correct some inaccuracies in the letter from Coun Sue Sunderland (March 15).

At present, all calls made to 01904 551400 are answered in York, by a small team of dedicated advisors who have a thorough knowledge of the York area. This service is currently available 8am-8pm Monday to Saturday, 8am-2pm on Sundays.

At no time are any of these calls transferred elsewhere, as Coun Sunderland erroneously claims.

Calls made locally to the national Traveline number 0870 608 2 608 are also routed to the Bus Information office, and it is these calls only that are routed to the Hull office when the York staff are busy and after 2pm on Sundays.

The staff in Hull handle these calls to the best of their ability, but sometimes lack the local knowledge necessary to fully answer the enquiry.

It is also incorrect to say that people "need to make a special trip" to collect timetables from our office. They can simply pick up the phone or send us an e-mail and timetables are posted out to them straight away.

The idea of having timetables available from local outlets is in itself laudable, but who will ensure that the timetables are up to date? The Bus Information office stocks timetables for all the local bus operators (currently 11 different companies serve York itself) as well as many for the surrounding area.

Keeping this information up to date is no mean feat.

If people are to use public transport, it is essential to have good, local information readily available. Not everyone has access to the internet or wishes to get their information in this way.

Stones Close,

York.
