DO you remember the winter of discontent when the miners' unions had a strike, we had a three-day week and we had no electricity - parts of York were turned off while the other side had power?

Other unions had a strike and our streets were lined with tons of rubbish. Am I wrong or have the unions in the past tried to rule or ruin Britain?

It seems Ben Drake is also against a person trying to help Britain become Britain once again (March 15).

Unions and its leaders such as Ben Drake are not happy until they bring a once-great Britain to its knees. Does it matter who helps us, so long as we all try pulling together?

British Leyland broke down due to unions. What are the unions doing now when companies decide to take jobs to foreign countries leaving Britain with fewer jobs?

I believe it's Ben Drake who is disrespectful attempting to bring disrepute on a person who is trying to help our country. I ask you who actually has a twisted hidden agenda.

Ben, they are not Rowntree's workers, they are Nestl workers - Rowntree's vacated York years ago!

Our water and electricity are foreign owned. Trains are made in Germany when they could have been built in Britain.

Now it looks as if Ben is going to help waste York council taxpayers' money by coming out on strike. Union trouble again, I rest my case.

D Wardell,

Malton Road, York.
