Several chances and the lion's share of possession and territory were simply not enough for Selby as they dropped out of the Yorkshire Shield 13-6 to lower league Knottingley.

Selby showed little vision in attack and let Knottingley into the game with a series of handling errors to give the Yorkshire 2 outfit their third Yorkshire 1 scalp in this year's competition.

The early exchanges were even and Selby could have gone ahead in the 19th minute after an adventurous three-quarter move but a knock-on stifled the attack.

They did eventually break the deadlock three minutes later when Dan Porter successfully kicked a penalty in front of the posts for offside.

Further surges forward died with a reluctance to kick over the Knottingley line and eventually Knottingley got off the mark after using a scrum to cross and lead 7-3.

A chance to get back in front before half-time with two penalties was missed.

Selby went further behind in the 42nd minute to another penalty, which Porter countered to keep the gap at four points.

More promising back play from Selby came to nothing as the ball was again dropped and Knottingley pounced on the chance to open a six-point gap with a drop goal in the 52nd minute.

Selby continued to attack but some resolute Knottingley defending proved unassailable as the hosts bowed out of the Shield in an increasingly frustrating season.
