TEENAGER Neil Cordell wrested the York Men's Open Squash Championship crown from defending champion Matt Lowery at Wigginton last night.

Cordell's 9-2 6-9 9-6 9-4 triumph in the final gives the Cordell household a unique double as they now hold both the men's and women's York open titles. Neil's elder sister Kathryn won the ladies championship last month.

There was a Cordell family double success last night too, as Neil's father Ian won the Plate final.

Lowery failed in his bid to score a third consecutive win over the 16-year-old former England junior international.

It was a brutal first game, with both players trying to establish ascendancy, and Cordell won 9-2.

Lowery upped the pace in the second and forced some uncharacteristic errors from the junior. But in the third, Cordell started to attack a\nd brought Lowery in short again and again. The tactic worked as Cordell won 9-6.

The match went into its 90th minute, with Cordell again attacking.

Lowery made the occasional unforced error and after 105 minutes victory went to Cordell, the junior being slightly tighter in line and length than his opponent.

in the Plate final, Neil's father Ian Cordell battled back from the brink of defeat to beat Ben Riley 3-9 1-9 10-8 9-2 9-6.

Riley took the initiative early on, and with a combination of power and subtle drops went into a comfortable 2-0 lead.

Riley was still dominant in the third game but Cordell tried to slow things down and from 7-0 behind he started to claw points back.

Riley had match ball at 8-3 in the third but failed to capitalise and Cordell in one hand closed the game out 10-8.

In the fourth game Cordell consistently caught out Riley with his trademark backhand drop shot and ran out an easy 9-2 winner.

Cordell was quickly 4-0 ahead in the fifth, but Riley pegged him back to 4-3. Cordell re-asserted his control and converted his second match ball to win the Plate trophy at the third time of asking.

Wigginton's Neil Cordell had mixed fortunes in his senior Yorkshire squash debut.

Due to the late withdrawal of number one Lawrence De Lesaux, the teenager was thrown in at number four string and found the going tough against full time profesional Tom Richards (Surrey) in the Inter County semi-final match.

Surrey proved too strong for the weakened Yorkshire side running out 4 -1 winners.

In the play off for third place against surprise semi-finalists Cambridgeshire Cordell again playied at number four.

This time he dominated his opponent in the first game then held his nerve well in the second and third to run out a 3/0 winner and helped Yorkshire win the match 3-2.
