A REVISED version of the Highway Code is under consultation at the moment.

It contains a rule which states that cyclists should use cycle lanes wherever possible.

I do not agree that this should form part of the code. Cycle tracks, even here in cycle-friendly York, are all too often badly designed and dangerous.

Black spots here in York include the track along The Mount heading out of town on the south side of the road; the roundabout at the end of Heslington Lane; and the track on the roundabout on Castle Mills Bridge.

I urge concerned cyclists to respond to the consultation. Responses should be sent to the Driving Standards Agency, or the Road Safety Minister Dr Ladyman. More information can be found on www.cyclenetwork.org.uk
