STEP up security or risk being burgled - that is the message to householders in some parts of York after burglaries soared in the last six weeks.

In recent weeks, there has been one burglary a day in Clifton and The Groves. There were 26 last month, and 14 in the last two weeks.

Police say the numbers have soared since the beginning of February.

Safer York Partnership has warned all residents in these areas to pay extra attention to their home security.

In a number of the recent incidents, the burglar has climbed on a wheelie bin to gain access to an upstairs window.

Residents are now being asked to keep their bins well away from the house and to secure all windows and doors.

Director Jane Mowat said: "These are spur of the moment burglaries which occur simply because an opportunity has presented itself. There is nothing premeditated about these incidents - the burglar will scan properties for open windows that can be accessed easily and will try every door until one yields.

"Today's burglar moves with stealth, is looking for a quick gain and will strike in broad daylight, regardless of whether people are in the property or the garden at the time."

Small items of high cash value are most likely to be stolen. Residents in Clifton and the Groves have reported the theft of cash, wallets, purses, handbags, jewellery, iPods, cameras, mobile phones, and lap-tops, which can all be carried easily and are easily converted to cash.

The Safer York Partnership is advising people living in the area to take extra care to lock doors and windows at all times, even when they are at home, or if they are only nipping out for a few minutes.

They also advise taking your keys, bags and wallets to your bedroom with you when you go to bed.

Other tips from the Safer York Partnership are:

Keep valuables well away from doors and windows

Make sure sheds and garages are secure

Get a burglar alarm fitted and use it

Don't leave tools lying around outside - put them away immediately

Always keep bikes in a secure place such as a shed or garage.

Use good quality locks

Help your neighbours, especially if they are vulnerable or elderly.
