MEMBERS of the Yearsley Pool Action Group would like to correct some of the misconceptions of Coun Evans ("Pool To Shut For A Month", March 13).

Rather than disparage the Yearsley for its age, Coun Evans should extol the virtues of the superb Yearsley tank that is still going strong after nearly 100 years of service.

Unlike modern pools that have a 25-year shelf life, the Yearsley pool tank could carry on indefinitely. It doesn't contain any steel reinforcement that could corrode, and there are no known failure mechanisms within the concrete.

The Yearsley building has suffered from long-term neglect, and low-cost fixes under the previous administration. The Liberal Democrats have inherited this situation. Despite this, the fact that the imminent repair (excluding roof netting) is the first major work required for several years, is testament to the Yearsley's solid design and build.

The repair to the pipework is necessary, both on technical grounds and for the long-term future benefit of Yearsley Pool and its users. The work has been carefully scheduled to create minimal disruption to schools and swimming lessons, and has been organised to coincide with work to create a much-needed new disabled shower and toilet facility.

The Yearsley Pool does not require modernisation; it requires a sensible refurbishment in line with user wishes. Ninety nine per cent of the consulted Yearsley users voted to refurbish the existing layout, rather than adopt a modern strategy.

Any attempt to impose so-called modernisation by any political party will be met by fierce opposition. We hope that Coun Evans understands this perspective, and gives his assurance that the Labour group is committed to refurbishing the Yearsley pool, rather than destroying it.
